Our goal is to promote jazz in France
Throughout
the XXth century, jazz has been enthusiastically appreciated in Europe.
Many American musicians chose to settle down in France, sometimes for a
while, sometimes for ever. Many jazz magazines were created, some very
early in the history of jazz like the French Jazz Hot in 1935 or Jazz Journal International in England. Finally, the huge number of summer festivals shows how deeply embedded in the cultural circuit jazz is.
And
yet, although jazz benefits from a positive image, it remains
under-estimated. The word jazz is often used and often misused or even
co-opted to promote other types of music.
For us, jazz is a deep
cultural force that deserves to be better know for the sheer power of
its history and its aesthetic and philosophical values.
Jazz
was at the forefront of historical events in the XXth century. The
Harlem Renaissance, the aftermath of World War II, the Civil Rights
Movement, Katrina - jazz was always there as a force of life and
emancipation. It has always stood as a music that ultimately was
concerned with struggle and freedom, guided by a light that was both
spiritual and joyful.
Jazz has gained universal acceptance. It
has spread throughout the world but remains deeply American, fostering
all the major musical developments of the past hundred years. Even
classical music was touched by its rhythmic concept, its colours and
improvisational liveliness.
But the roots of jazz are definitely
to be found in the blues. Despite all its rhythmical of expressive
variations (gospel, hard-bop, “gypsy”, rhythm and blues, funk…), jazz
has kept reinventing itself through the blues.
SPIRIT
OF JAZZ has chosen to promote authentic creative artists whose dynamic
take on tradition makes jazz the ever forward-thinking music it is.
